Scenic Reserve and Loop Track

Scenic Reserve and Loop Track

Hakea is settled amongst Pakoka Scenic Reserve on the North side of Aotea Harbour 20km from Raglan township. The reserve has ecological and historical importance and is home to many native species, plants and birds.

The reserve is in the second generation of the regeneration process, covered with many natives including kanuka, kowhai, rewarewa, tanekaha, rimu, totara, miro, nikau and ponga. Kereru, piwakawaka, tui, and ruru can be spotted eating from trees or singing in the bush.

The Karetoto inlet was used by both Māori and European settlers, and historically, the land was known for its fertility and growing kumara. The inlet is a common nesting spot for land and shore birds, and sea creatures that enjoy muddy water.

Loop Track

Only a short walk from the main dwellings, you will be surrounded by native forest and harbor views. Walk through trees, enjoy look-out points and jump into the private inlet of Karetoto. You can enjoy bird spotting and glowworms can be seen on the rocks by the creek at night.
